Nityanand Saha Martyrdom Day is celebrated every year on 3 August. This was the day when in 1955 Nityanand Saha sacrificed his life for the freedom of Goa. He was one such honest satyagrahi who challenged the colonial Portuguese rule on the basis of his passion without using any weapon.
On 3 August 1955 Nityanand Saha was shot during a peaceful protest in Goa. This protest was not a part of any battle, it was just a call. A call that wanted to see one more piece of the country free. His martyrdom not only raised the demand for justice but awakened the whole country.
At that time Goa was still under Portuguese rule but the sacrifice of people like Saha gave a new light to the Goa Liberation Movement. His martyrdom proved that freedom was not limited to 15 August 1947. Rather, someone sacrificed everything for every corner, every piece. Even today, Nityanand Shah reminds us that the weapon of a true patriot is not just a gun, but his courage, truth and dedication are also his weapons.

The roots of this day are linked to 1959 when Ratnakar Matkari and Sudha Karmarkar together brought alive a professional Marathi children’s play Madhumanjiri on stage for the first time. These days, creative performances, acting workshops and creative competitions are held in schools, cultural centres and drama troupes of Maharashtra, in which children below the age of 16 years display their talent on the stage.
